Welcome to the Van Raamsdonk lab website

We are interested in the biology of aging, biological resilience and the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disease. Using a Geroscience approach, we study the biology and genetics of aging and resilience and apply that knowledge to develop novel treatments for neurodegenerative disease. Our work primarily uses the worm C. elegans as a model organism and we are very interested in the mitochondria.

We are part of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill as well as the Metabolic Disorders and Complications (MeDiC) program and Brain Repair and Integrative Neuroscience (BRaIN) program at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC).

January 2026 – Jeremy was promoted to Full Professor.
January 2026 – Alibek successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis. Congratulations Dr. Moldakozhayev! Alibek will be starting a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard. Good luck Alibek.
December 2025 - Our paper “Cyrene: a novel geroprotective compound that extends lifespan and healthspan in C. elegans and Drosophila.” was published in npj Aging. Congratulations to first author Abdel and contributing author Suleima.
October 2025 – Suleima was awarded the prize for the best talk at the Canadian Translational Geroscience Network meeting in Toronto. Congratulations Suleima!
October 2025 – Six members of the lab were chosen to give talks at the Canadian Translational Geroscince Network meeting including Mutian, Maisha, Suleima, Ulrich, Aura and Alibek. Alibek was given a full length talk for Bright Young Minds. Great job everyone! See more lab news here
